COMPUTER MEMORY
Computer memory is device that is used to store data or
programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary or permanent basis for use
in an electronic digital computer.
Type of memory
Primary memory
Primary memory is the only type of memory which is
directly accessed by the CPU. The CPU continuously reads instructions stored in
the primary memory and executes them. Any data that has to be operated by the
CPU is also stored. The information is transferred to various locations through
the BUS. Primary memories are of two types. They are:
1.
RAM
2.
ROM
1.RAM:-
It
stands for Random Access Memory. Here data can be stored temporarily, so this type of memory is called
as temporary memory or volatile memory because when power fails the data from
RAM will be erased. The information stored in the RAM is basically loaded from
the computer’s disk and includes information related to the operating system
and applications that are currently executed by the processor
1. ROM:-
It
stands for Read Only Memory. In this, the data will be furnished by the
manufacturers regarding the system, so this information can simply be read by
the user but cannot add new data or it cannot be modified.
SECONDARY MEMORY
Secondary
memory is where programs and data are kept on a long-term basis. Common
secondary storage devices are :
1. Magnetic
disks
2. Magnetic
tape
3. USB
flash drive
4. Mass
storage devices
1 1. Magnetic disks:-
A magnetic disk is a storage device that uses a
magnetization process to read, write, rewrite and access data. It is covered with a
magnetic coating and stores data in the form of tracks, spots and sectors. Hard disks, zip disks and
floppy disks are common examples
2.Magnetic tap:-
Magnetic tap is a long
and narrow strip of plastic that
thin magnetic material is coated on. Nearly all recording tape
is of this type, whether used for
recording audio or video or computer data
storage.
3.USB flash drive:-
A USB flash
drive (USB stands for Universal Serial Bus) is a popular
way to store digital information. Flash drives are an easy way to
share data (information). A USB flash drive can be attached to
a USB port, and provides a certain amount of storage space, which can be
used to store data. USB flash drives are used with devices found in homes,
workplaces etc.
4.Mass storage devices;-
A
mass storage device (MSD) is any storage device that makes it
possible to store and port large amounts of data across computers, servers and
within an IT environment. MSDs are portable storage media that
provide a storage interface that can be both internal and external to
the computer
